Secure Shell, better known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol employed to execute commands on a remote server or to exchange data between a hosting server and a client. As the data exchanged by the 2 sides is encoded, a third party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH an ideal means of managing a website hosting account. The commands which could be executed are determined by the type of hosting service. On a shared hosting server, for instance, the options are limited because you shall not have root access to the machine, so you could simply create/move/delete files, set up and unpack archives, import and export databases, and so forth. These are all actions which are performed within the shared hosting account and do not require a higher level of access. By using a virtual or a dedicated server, you'll have the ability to install server-side software or to restart the machine or just a specific service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted via a command line, but if you do not use a UNIX-like OS, there are a variety of apps for other OSs, you can employ to connect to the remote hosting server as well.
SSH Telnet in Shared Web Hosting
If you have a shared web hosting
account with our company and you want to handle your content remotely using SSH, you can obtain SSH access to the account via your Hepsia Control Panel. If your plan does not come with this feature by default, you can add it with a few clicks via the Upgrades menu. In the SSH section of the Control Panel, you shall see the host, the port number and the username which you should use when you connect to the account. You may also select what password you would like to use, as it does not have to be the same as the one for your account. We've prepared a lot of Help articles where you could find all the commands that you will be able to use with a shared hosting package, as well as examples of how they are used. In addition, if SSH access is permitted for your account, you shall be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection through a standard client such as FileZilla, for instance.
SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting
SSH access is available as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server
plans, while with others you are able to add it from the hosting CP if required - even only for the current month. In any case, you could activate and de-activate the feature with one mouse click via the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same location, you'll find the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You shall also find a box in which you can easily input the password you want to use, as it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you may also change it as much as you want. The full list of the commands which can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and several examples. An extra feature after SSH access is allowed shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this kind of connections.
SSH Telnet in VPS Web Hosting
The virtual private server
plans that we offer include SSH access as standard, not as an additional upgrade or a function that you have to activate. As soon as your new server is prepared, you'll be able to connect and start working on your content through the login details which you have entered during the order process. A copy of the SSH credentials shall be sent to you via e-mail as well. As your VPS will be isolated from the other ones on the physical server, there are no limitations regarding what you can or cannot do through SSH. You'll be able to download, install and manage any piece of software which will run on a Linux server, reboot the whole server or only a specific software component, and work with files, folders and databases without restrictions. All you'll need for this is a console or an SSH client on your end.
